I started with Bravenet, but their server seemed to have problems from time to time. My number one choice is Godaddy.com. I have used their hosting and mysql database for 4 years now. The only thing I wish Godaddy would improve on is a toll free number instead of long distance, even though their tech support is 24/7.

I'm glad you have a good experience with GoDaddy, but I would not recommend them. A client project was already with GoDaddy, and while they're not bad, in my experience, you can do better. I always recommend using a company that just does hosting (whereas GoDaddy's business is primarily domain registration).

I don't personally know of any. I would definitely avoid any ranking sites. That's pretty much where I got all my worst hosts over the years. It's impossible to know which of those ranking sites allow for a paid influence and which do not.

Thanks Larry. If feasible, we would appreciate sharing from your experience and knowledge your top 3-5 favourite hosts and justifications. Is there also a recommended list of questions (template of questions) we should ask the webhosts? Another template of how to assess and rank them according to their responses would add a lot of value. Templates could be your own or from another source you trust or happy with. While the question is addressed to Larry, other freinds are requested to share any such templates they might have, referring to the source, if any.

I agree with Jonathan. I am using HostGator right now and have had a great experience so far. I have contacted support a couple times and every time the response was extremely fast, and extremely helpful.

On the flip side, I would avoid 1and1 like the plague. In my opinion they are more concerned about roping you in than keeping you. They have a custom control panel that is lightyears behind cPanel, and they have just about everything locked down tight. Good host if you use their template generator I imagine, but when you have to jump through hoops just to set up a MySQL database you should look elsewhere.

I'll put in two cents for Siteground.com whom I've been with as a reseller for about 7 years. I have about 15 domains there. Here is a brief history from when I started:

I chose them because I was referred to them by a friend that say their support was excellent. I found this to be true. I could email tech support and get a response within 15 minutes every time. As they grew, they decided to cut costs by steering clients away from tickets on the tech support system to searches on their knowledge base. Eventually, it was almost impossible to get help from starting a ticket or calling them on the phone. They sucked.  I almost jumped ship but it was so difficult to move all those domains somewhere else so I hunkered down and rode out the storm.

In the last 3 years everything started to reverse itself. Now getting help is quite easy and fast again. Tech support is always my number one concern.

I pay $45-$49/year per domain to host on a shared server. They have the usual control panel and all its accessories.
