  1. Thanks for your reply Larry. I can fix the parse-error now. But another problem arise like this when I set the utf8 encoding for MySQL: Warning: mysqli_set_charset() expects parameter 1 to be mysqli, resource given in C:\xampp\htdocs\mysqli_connect.php on line 13 Line 13 in my Notepad++ is like this: mysqli_set_charset($dbc, 'utf8'); Another question I'd like to ask you or someone else if there is any way I can capture the screenshot and paste it directly into this post. I tried to use several Web browsers and even enable some security settings of Internet Explorer to allow a website to access the clipboard, but those tricks don't work for me. Hope somebody can tell me what to do with the paste feature in this forum so that it will be easier for me to explain my PHP errors by using the screenshot. Thanks again for your time to view my post.
  2. To Larry or some one else that can help me to resolve this error message: I am using XAMPP panel to test the PHP files for this book. However, I try to run script 9.2 and got this error message: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected 'DEFINE' (T_STRING) in C:\xampp\htdocs\mysqli_connect.php on line 5 Here is the code that I used: <?php #Script 9.2 mysqli_connect.php //Set the database access information as constants: DEFINE ('DB_USER', 'root'); DEFINE ('DB_PASSWORD', 'mypass1'); DEFINE ('DB_HOST', 'localhost'); DEFINE ('DB_NAME', 'sitename'); //Make the connection: $dbc = @mysqli_connect(DB_HOST, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, DB_NAME) OR die ('Could not connect to MySQL: ' . mysql_connect_error()); //Set the encoding: mysqli_set_charset($dbc, 'utf8'); ?> I also tried to use these authentication for mysqli_test.php script , and they just worked fine.
