Perhaps someone could answer this question for me. How do marketers know what commerce sites you have recently visited in order to place specific advertisements on the sidebar of websites that you subsequently visit? I'm guessing it has something to do with cookies but if I'm not mistaken, it's my understanding that vendors do not have access to cookies other than their own.

Yes, cookies are only accessible at the server that sent them, so how this works across multiple sites is an interesting question. There are a couple of different possibilities, but the easiest one is that when sites use a third-party advertising system that creates content within an iframe. The cookie is then between you and the third-party's site. Any other site that uses that same advertising system can also reference that cookie (within the iframe).
