Ajax Login Example From Chapter 11

Hi there

 

I just have a quick question regarding the login example in chapter 11 on ajax:

When checking the the status of the ajax request, why is it necessary to submit the form if a bad status is returned? I might have missed something obvious here, but can't seem to get my head around it!
