Silver
I have been using Notepad++ as a text editor for a while now, however, I realized recently that while the code was error-free, it could not be run. After many many unsuccessful attempts I just felt the code could be stuck somehow and I dropped it one line down. It worked!! From your experience and knowledge, which free text editor you consider best?
HartleySan
A fellow poster on these boards recommended Notepad2 to me a while ago, and I have never had the need to use any other text editor. As far as I know though, Notepad2 only works in Windows.
Silver
Thanks HartleySan. If others might suggest something better than Notepad2, they are requested to advise whether their recommendation is based on experience or on reliable academic research, giving reference to such research, in any. As Larry did not recommend relying on ranking sites for selecting good host companies, I am afraid ranking sites could not be reliable as well for recommending good text editors. Jonathon
Context is free and is my backup editor, but you can get free IDEs, Netbeans is free (I believe). Also Gedit as an editor I like too. http://netbeans.org/ http://www.contexteditor.org/ http://projects.gnome.org/gedit/
Paul Swanson
I've been using NetBeans for some time. Yes, it is free. If you are looking for something more lightweight to compare to Notepad++, check out SciTE.
