Archives For presentation

It’s three in the morning, and I’ve just arrived at my hotel in Instanbul, Turkey. It took 49 hours of travel to get here. I haven’t really slept in 37 hours. My one piece of luggage is nowhere to be found, which means that I don’t have my suit, laptop cords, laptop remote, or business cards. The presentation is in 8 hours. I have 8 hours to make up for two days without a good night’s sleep and to go shopping for presentable clothes. Oh, and did I mention that I’m deathly uncomfortable with public speaking?

Surprisingly, the presentation is going to go okay, in part because I had the good fortune to have read Scott Berkun’s “Confessions of a Public Speaker.” That may sound like hyperbole, but it’s true.

Two weeks ago, I had the honor of doing two days of training on JavaScript, jQuery, and Mobile Web Development for a group of about 20 community college instructors. For the JavaScript and jQuery parts, I used presentations created as ancillary materials for my “Modern JavaScript: Develop and Design” book. Because those ancillary materials are owned by the publisher (who will freely give then to instructors), I cannot post those parts of the presentation online. Here, however, are the slides for the “Introduction to Mobile Web Development” part of the training.

The presentation introduces the core concepts when it comes to mobile Web design, and then discusses jQuery Mobile in particular. Most of the information comes from various online resources, and whatever else I’ve figured out along the way. The one book I have read that discusses mobile Web design is O’Reilly’s Head First Mobile Web. I absolutely detest the Head First series, but found that book to be a decent introduction to the topic.

Yii2, What’s New

June 22, 2012

Alexander Makarov, recently gave a presentation at the Yiiconf 2012 (note that site is in Russian) titled “Yii2, What’s New“. In the presentation, Makarov, one of the core Yii framework developers and the author of the Yii 1.1 Application Development Cookbook, discussed both Yii’s current status and the expected changes in the upcoming Yii version 2. I believe that an alpha version of Yii2 will be out later this summer (and, in fact, I’ll be coordinating the writing of [intlink id=”3187″ type=”post”]my Yii book[/intlink] with the release of Yii2).

The presentation quickly explains where Yii current stands, how Yii got to be here, and where Yii is going in the future. There’s even a reference to yours truly!

In this edition…

Here are my slides from my “Building a Successful E-commerce Venture, or Failing Gracefully” presentation that I gave in Istanbul, Turkey at the E-commerce Expo on May 30, 2012. A couple of the 3D graphs got clipped, but other than that, it’s all there. I actually started off writing a formal script, so the notes are fairly true to what I said during the presentation.
